Careers Advice

The Norwest Futures Program in the Secondary Years is designed to engage students in the long-term planning process required to transition them successfully from their high school years to tertiary study, apprenticeships, traineeships or the workforce.

One of the key elements of career development is exploration and inspiration. Throughout Secondary, students are given opportunities to meet and engage with a wide range of industry professionals related to their key learning areas. This occurs naturally through excursions and visits to the College by invited speakers. We see these first-hand conversations as one of the essential elements of inspiration.

Additionally, relevant industry excursions that target specific career interest areas are offered. These include Defence Force, Taronga Zoo, University visits, Health, Police Force, and special events in STEM.

To enhance exploration and inspiration, Year 10 students learn about the world of work through two weeks of work experience. These opportunities are invaluable in taking our students into workplaces where they can participate in work alongside professionals in a wide range of areas. The learning that comes through work experience plays a crucial part in shaping ideas for future work.

Students are given the opportunity to consider their future career plans through individual meetings for every student with the Career Counsellor. These are offered in Year 10 and ongoing through Years 11 and 12.

Intentional and deliberate steps related to their goals for their future are supported. These steps include committing to academic success, participation in College and community life, making suitable subject choices and gaining experience in their field of interest wherever possible. Each student is assisted with a personal plan for future study and work.

It may be possible to include vocational education pathways through School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships, TAFE and other vocational training providers.
